Monterosso al Mare is a town and comune
in the province of La Spezia, part of the region of Liguria (northern
italy). It is one of the five villages in Cinque Terre. The town
is divided into two distinct parts: the old town and the new town.
The two areas are divided by a single tunnel that caters to pedestrians
and the very few cars in the town.

The Cinque Terre are five coastal
villages in the province of La Spezia in the Liguria region of
Italy. "Discovered" by foreigners in the late 20th century, they
have come to be among the most popular areas of Italy among tourists.
The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides
are all encapsulated in a national park by the same name. The
Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The five villages
are, from west to east (i.e., from Genoa towards La Spezia): Monterosso
al Mare Vernazza Corniglia Manarola Riomaggiore.

The Committee decided to inscribe
this site on the basis of criteria (ii), (iv) and (v), considering
that the eastern Ligurian Riviera between Cinque Terre and Portovenere
is a cultural site of outstanding value, representing the harmonious
interaction between people and nature to produce a landscape of
exceptional scenic quality that illustrates a traditional way
of life that has existed for a thousand years and continues to
play an important socio-economic role in the life of the community.
